The Six Sonatas and Partitas were composed during 1720, while Bach was in the service of Duke Ernst August as Kapellmeister and director of chamber music. Bach held this position for six years, 1717-1723, and it was during this period that most of his chamber music was composed.
This International edition is edited by Joseph Joachim and Andreas Moser, with a foreword by Mr. Moser. The format of this edition is somewhat unusual, appearing in score with a bigger typeset on the top staff and a smaller, almost parenthetical typeset on the lower staff. The player is intended to follow the top staff for performance; the bottom staff is a reproduction of the manuscript.
